Chapter Eleven
Liosha stood in the corner of the room, letting the doctor talk to Cindy. Her prognosis was good, and though she was a hot mess, Liosha thought she was holding up much better than they had any right to expect, given the circumstances. The little girl was one tough cookie, thatâs for sure. It made her sad thinking about it. What would a child have to go through in her life to be able to withstand the type of loss sheâd endured last night?
The doctor left the room and Liosha went to Cindy. âYouâre gonna be okay, little one. Youâre going to have to come back for more tests later to make sure your foot is good, but the doctor thinks it will be fine eventually.â She rubbed Cindyâs back, the girl smiled.
Cindy reached for her pad and scribbled. When is the next nurse going to be here? I donât want you to leave.
The note brought an ear-to-ear grin to Lioshaâs face. Some patients you couldnât wait to get away from, but not Cindy. She was the type of patient you looked forward to each day. A good girl, a fighter. You couldnât help but root for her and want to be a part of her recovery process. âSo, Iâve got good news and bad news. The good news, Iâll be your nurse for at least the next shift. A lot of the staff couldnât make it in today because of the storm and the state of emergency, so they asked everyone who was already here to stay and work overtime. Now hereâs the bad news. Itâs busier here during the day. Even if we donât have many new patients coming in today, there is just more that is done during the day, and with us being short-staffed, it means weâre all going to have to do more work. So yes, I will be here today, sweet girl, but it might take me longer to get to you. If Iâm slow to come by, donât get upset. Iâll be here, Iâm just super busy. There's a chance they may continue diverting patients to the other area hospitals; if that happens, Iâll be more available.â
Cindy scribbled on the pad again. Okay, Iâll try not to bother you too much. Just donât forget about me!
âHow could anybody forget you? Youâre precious. Food should be here any minute. Itâs actually a bit late, so hopefully it wonât be much longer. Iâve gotta go to the nursesâ station but Iâll be back. Iâll see what kind of books we have lying around the hospital for when I come around. Why donât you watch some TV?â
Cindy nodded and started flipping through the stations.
Just as Liosha made it back to the nursesâ station, an alarm sounded for one of the rooms at the other end of the hall. She dropped what she was doing and ran to the patient emergency.
The day was sure to be a long one.
